The Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) showcase the best of Australian design. First held in 2001, the prestigious awards program receives hundreds of submissions from across Australia each year and is recognised by the Australian design community as the country’s pre-eminent Interior Design awards program.
IDEA10 promotes and rewards recent work in interior design and product design across 14 different categories, as well as recognising emerging young talent and designers whose work demonstrates exemplary sustainable objectives.
Shortlisted entries were published in (inside) magazine throughout the year, and winners were announced last night at a gala party held in Sydney @ The Ivy. A packed house of design industry afficionados attended the presentation ceremony announcing the 2010 winners, and toasted Australian design excellence at the spectacular after party.
Best Overall Project of the Year

2010 Gold Medal
Of all the IDEA award categories, the Gold Medal is one of the most prestigious. With 2010 being its inaugural year, this award recognises the distinguished contribution made by an Australian designer to design culture over the course of their career. A Gold Medal shortlist was generated through nominations, which were then be assessed by the IDEA 2010 jury.
Winner >> Sue Carr ( Carr Design )
Sue Carr, known for her innovation and progressive design thinking, has won Australia’s highest interior design award – the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) Gold Medal for Interior Design.
With 2010 being its inaugural year, the IDEA Gold Medal represents the interior design profession’s highest accolade and recognises the distinguished contribution made by an Australian designer to design culture over the course of their career.
Sue is recognised as an exemplary designer of exceptional sensibility and expertise, and as one who has encouraged a more progressive and enquiring approach to the design and construction of buildings both in Australia and internationally.
Sue was a co-founder of Inarc in the early seventies and worked alongside Denton Corker Marshall before she successfully opened Carr Design. She is a respected interior designer educator and member of the DIA. Some of her landmark projects include the Hilton Hotel interiors Adelaide, Westin Hotel interiors Melbourne, Australian Stock Exchange and Deacons Law Tenancy National Roll Out.

Designer of the Year Award
The Designer of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious awards of IDEA 2010 and this year, the category has been enhanced and two awards are on offer.
Judges Award winner >> Jeff Copolov ( Bates Smart )
This prize was decided by the IDEA 2010 jury and recognised outstanding success by a designer who has submitted entries into the Idea Awards.
Jeff is the Interior Design Director of Bates Smart and one of Australia’s most talented interior designers. He has a classically modern, timeless approach to design and a reputation for producing appropriate and economic design solutions. Jeff has been responsible for numerous projects across a broad range of project types including commercial, hospitality, residential, institution, education, and health and science projects. He has been Interior Design Director for all scale of projects directing interior design staff and overseeing the entire interior design process.
Jeff’s expertise lies in his strategic planning, conceptual design, and the developmental stage of projects with specific specialist knowledge in commercial, hospitality and residential interior design. Jeff is committed to a highly consultative approach to design and the involvement of the client in the design process.
Peoples Choice winner >> Rachel Luchetti & Stuart Krelle ( Luchetti Krelle )
The People’s Choice Award and the winner is the designer most nominated by his or her peers. This year the format of the People’s Choice Award for Designer of the Year was changed so that only designers who have been shortlisted in IDEA 2010 can be nominated.
Rachel Luchetti and Stuart Krelle established Luchetti Krelle in early 2008, bringing together their varied experience from working at other multi-disciplinary companies. Having completed several restaurant and bar interiors, the firm’s main focus is hospitality design. As well as interior and product design, Luchetti Krelle also encompasses identity and branding design, and project management.
The studio’s collaborative design dialogue brings character, innovation and experimentation to each project, creating unique, customised spaces that respond to client briefs, anticipate future trends and acknowledge current international design styles
Best Commercial Interior > 1,000 sq mtrs
The Best Major Commercial Interior Award showcased spaces that are over 1000m2 and are both responsive to the commercial needs of the client and the occupational needs of the staff. Shortlisted entries used intelligent planning, innovative products, environmentally responsive solutions and state-of-the-art technology to generate commercial environments that are visionary and progressive.
Planning, space usage, flexibility, lighting, design language and the use of products and materials were all assessed.

Best Major Commercial Project < 1,000 sq mtrs
The Best Commercial Interior Award under 1000m2 will feature projects that have been designed within the parameter of size. Shortlisted projects will encapsulate innovative design, intelligent planning and responsive solutions for restricted areas and perhaps restrained budgets.
The jury sought creative projects that fulfill the needs of the client with creative responses and inventive solutions. This category will publish and award residential interiors that illustrate excellence in design and are responsive to the living needs of residents, location and climate in which the project is situated.

Best Residential Interior – Multi Dwelling
The Best Residential Interior Multi Dwelling Award showcases the interior spaces of high, medium and low density residential developments across Australia that utilise sound design principles to craft places for people to live and enjoy the elements that combine to make a home.
Entries must be completed, habitable apartments. Display apartments that are not occupied were not eligible. This category primarily recognises the interior design excellence of an apartment. This does not preclude the entry of projects that may be described as ‘whole of building’ apartment designs, but submissions were considered and judged giving specific priority to the building’s interior design.

Best Residential Interior – Single Dwelling
The Best Residential Interior Single Dwelling Award will publish and award residential interiors that illustrate excellence in design and are responsive to the living needs of residents, location and the climate in which the project is situated. The interior response to planning, site and climatic factors is assessed. Excellence in construction and detailing, as well as the enlightened use of fixtures, furniture and technology are all reviewed in order to select a project that is arguably the best designed residential interior in the country.

Best HospitalityInterior
Best Hospitality Interior awards the most outstanding hospitality interior spaces in Australia – spaces that are sophisticated, finely detailed and lit, and inspiring. This category awards interiors ranging from restaurants and bars to hotels and resorts. All selected projects will be stunning spaces in which the public socialise, eat, drink and indulge the senses
The designer’s response to concepts of human scale, privacy/openness, space planning, the theatrical staging of food preparation and social discourse, aided in selecting the winners.

Best Retail Interior
Best Retail Interior showcased the interior spaces of fashion boutiques, hair salons, showrooms and general retail spaces throughout Australia that perform as strong brand communicators and innovative, dynamic retail environments.
The designer’s response to brand development, merchandising, planning, and detailing will be assessed. Fit-out, joinery and product presentation, as well as use of retail technology, fixtures, furniture and lighting were all reviewed in order to select a project that is arguably the most well designed retail interior in the country

Best Event Design
Responding to the diverse nature of projects throughout Australia, a new category was added to IDEA 2010. This category showcases built work that is associated with events, exhibitions and structures of a temporary nature.
The Event category provides the framework to feature a sumptuous marquee at the Melbourne Racing Carnival, a cutting-edge exposition at the National Gallery or the latest ‘pop up’ shop with a finite life span. The Event category acknowledges that great design isn’t always built to last but will be remembered for years to come

Best Institutional Interior
The Best Institutional Interior Award showcases interior designs that respond to a range of public interior design programs – libraries, museums, government buildings, hospitals etc.
Shortlisted entries used intelligent planning, innovative products, environmentally responsive solutions and state-of-the-art technology to generate institutional and public spaces that were visionary and progressive. Planning, space usage, flexibility, lighting, design language and the use of products and materials were assessed

Best Sustainable Project
When entering a project under one of the IDEA categories, designers may also elected to have their submission considered for the bonus Sustainability category. The jury considered work submitted across all project categories, with the decision to award this prize based on sustainable performance.
A leading design professional with specialist knowledge of sustainable design was invited to assist the jury in the judging of this category.

Emerging Designer of the Year
The Emerging Designer Award seeks to profile fresh design talent and reward those designers who exhibit great potential. The Award is only open to design practices that are less than five years old.
While technically this allows more mature designers who have only recently established a new design practice to enter, it is in the spirit of this category and in the shortlisting process to recognise young and emerging individuals. As a bonus category, only those who are already submitting projects for consideration to other awards and who meet the special criteria may apply for consideration under the Emerging Designer category.

Henry Pilcher currently designs furniture, lighting and other products, which marry craft and industrial technologies. Pilcher is driven by a desire to venerate the innate qualities of base materials, and draws inspiration from design history as well as material experimentation. Guided by a progressive approach to material choice, his designs are characterised by methods of construction that are sophisticated in their innovation and pared-back and approachable in their aesthetic.
