Alex Alorda ( interview) by ” Cool Hunting “
In the early 60’s, when Spain was still suffering the repercussions of the Civil War and a population living under the hard handed rule of Franco, Kettal founder Manuel Alorda took a trip to Germany with his Dutch father in-law to purchase outdoor furniture. Alorda had never seen outdoor furniture before and was immediately struck by the opportunity to bring beach and camping chairs to the Spanish market. A van was purchased, machinery was bought and Alorda began producing the German line of outdoor furniture for Spanish consumption.
Ten years later, as Franco’s influence declined and international trade normalized, Alorda began making his own designs and exporting his product throughout Europe. This transition began the recognition of Spanish design excellence in outdoor furniture and cemented the framework of the Kettal Group.
In 2010 Kettal won the National Design Prize from the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which is the highest recognition awarded in Spain to companies that successfully use design as part of their innovation strategy.
In the 19th edition of the prizes, the jury of experts and professionals chose Kettal “for their exemplary use of design in their business strategy and for their commitment to the environment and sustainability, and for innovating their products and industrial processes.” The importance of research, both scientific and technological, has always been key to their product development. The highly innovative nature of the brand means that one can obtain a high-quality product that in 2004 received ISO 9001 certification. Kettal, loyal to its philosophy of respect for the environment, uses eco-friendly paint. Almost all of Kettal’s furniture paints are now 100% ecological and recyclable, and the wood used is protected under Perhutani certification.
