Salone Milan 2010 – HIGHLIGHTS



Business as Usual - despite the Volcano ! / Link . The designs shown at the Salone are very important, because they likely will filter down to the mass marketplace, influencing high-end offerings and low-cost knockoffs. But lest anyone worry that practicality would spoil the party, rest assured: Innovation, inspiration and a touch of the avant-garde were still present at the fair.	Salone Satellite award winners / Link . In another step towards facilitating the interface between offer and demand, designers and businessmen and creativity and production. The prizes were awarded on the basis of poetry, technological innovation and social commitment.


Everyone to the Table / Link . A story of the Italian style of conviviality through a mosaic of emotional and sensorial suggestions evoked by memories of famous Renaissance banquets, film sequences, paintings, literary passages, theatrical performances and famous names from the world of cooking, art and culture.	A Celestial Bathroom / Link . This year the Bathroom Exhibition presented an event devoted to the bathroom as seen through the beauty of the female form and the celestial vault. It was held at the Civic Planetarium Ulrico Hoepli in Milan’s Giardini Pubblici, close to the Villa Reale.


John Pawsons' Stone House / Link . The important thing in these cases is not to be greedy, to be patient and try not to show off. I say this to “young” emerging architects: be careful of your desire to “knock down” the old to leave your mark… “scripta manent”!	Fashion Houses Move In / Link . Many of the A-list fashion houses have expanded way beyond the realms of mere fashion, opening hotels, bars and restaurants, and offering fully fledged furniture and home collections.


Conversation with Bjoka / Link . Cult design studio, Bokja exhibited ‘Conversations’, a project celebrating the narratives and experiences that make up a sofa.	Tom Dixon's Industry Review / Link . Tom Dixon presented a resolved and varied collection of lighting and furniture where the manufacturing processes are laid bare and the visitor can engage in the making of their own products. Inspired by the many and varied forms of industry, from mass production to cottage industry

Artisan Electronique / Link . In L’Artisan Electronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital techniques. The virtual pottery wheel was realised by means of a 3D-scanner and digital design software. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. Milan Design Village / Link . A second showing away from the main fair in Tortona’s Milano Design Village added some clout to the ailing Tortona district again.	Bulb chandelier by Tom Dixon / Link . The light bulb is as archetypal a product as you will find. New technologies have required an almost continuous evolution of its form. The recent introduction of CFL technology, and the benefits and problems that it presents, has demanded that this evolution continue. And yet CFL bulbs remain limited. Tom Dixon is offering people an alternative.


Street Fashion chic / Link . Fashion style as seen on the Streets and at the Launch Parties in Milan during Design Week, 2010	Established & Sons dinner party . Tom Dixon team rescued / Link . The Tom Dixon team returned safely from the Milan Salone Del Mobile in a convoy of ribs organised by TV presenter, Dan Snow.	Wallpaper / Link . This groundbreaking exhibition, taking over four floors of the Brioni house, was dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design.


Barovier & Toso / Link . The owners of Barovier & Toso, a 700-year-old Murano glass company, hired Paola Navone to create a dramatic installation. The result, tucked away in a hidden corner of SuperStudio, is a rhapsody in blue	Skitch / Link . SKITSCH released a 24 page A5 catalog. The booklet features comics and illustrations ( by Andy Rementer ) all mingling with the products and designers of SKITSCH

A series of second and third year students were selected from the IED photography course to produce a visual documentary of 2010’s Swarovski Crystal Palace exhibition at Via Tortona 32


Public Pies / Link . Public Pie bakes pies on site. From the bench to prepare the cakes to be slowly baked for you, which is also very relaxing at the same time, because this bench is also heated by the ovens . Doubly so nice … cake with hot ass!	$ Saving Dutch exhibitors / Link . Small spaces rent for thousands of euros making Milan an impossibility for most. Young Dutch designers, however, are using their creativity to get there thus ensuring their work is seen where it still matters most.


Yii Design / Link . The result of fifteen designers working with twenty master craftsmen was on show in Milan last week. Meaning ‘change and transformation’ in the context of Taiwanese philosophy, Yii is an intriguing blend of traditional and contemporary dialogue between crafts artists and designers from Taiwan.	Colours of Markus Benesch / Link . The new proposals by Markus Benesch, were characterized by strong three-dimensional inspiration. Great Italian and foreign designers were invited “Inside of this Think tank”, in order to outline micro-architectures within which to promote the meeting / exchange of architecture and design, two disciplines that are increasingly mixed in a game of liquid and transversal contaminations. Smart Grid by Jaime Hayon / Link . Just in time for Earth Day on April 22, Hayon illustrated renewable energy using design. The pavilion is a luminous grid that constantly transforms, creating an aseptic environment but one that is dynamic and enveloping at the same time	"Senza Tempo" by Minotti / Link . “Senza Tempo” (timeless) immediately evokes the hallmarks of this new collection, including durability, in both aesthetic and value terms.


Fish Peep show / Link . Peep-Show, Fishes and other Objects of Desire was an installation created especially for the event by the Interior Architecture/Space Design section of the Haute Ecole d’art et de Design – Geneva	Crumpled Trend Review / Link . The aesthetic of the imperfect and the indefinite is back. Furniture with corrugated surfaces, crumpled profiles as if crystallised in their formation. Volumes shaped by random strains that determine one of a kind forms.


10 designers 10 questions / Link . David Carlson went to Milan Design Week with Swedish knowledge company Designboost and recorded ten filmed interviews on the theme “Design for Life”.	Sapzio Rossana Orlandi / Link . The driving spirit behind Spazio Rossana Orlandi lies in the exploration and the discovery of all that is new and original in the world of interior and fashion design.


Amber Chair / Link . Layers of time appear through the visible essence of amber. Extracting inspiration from this ancient material, Jaeuk Jung has created a solution to reflect on the final moments of decaying objects.	Patrick Jouin's Bloom Light / Link . The Bloom lamp – designed by Patrick Jouin – adopts the form of a flower to control light. Made using printing technology, the shade of the lamp is built as a single piece, and collapses or expands in one movement to release or enclose light.

Emma attends the Audi new models launch ( sub compact A1 + luxury sedan A8) and interviews Moritz Waldemeyer ( Lucid Flux light installation designer ) and then heads off to the Hidden Heroes show and interviews Fabiana Vidal, the exhibition curator and designer.	Sexposure Citroen DS3 lounge / Link . "Sexposure" was designed by architect Fabio Rotella as a Living Open Air space featuring a lampshade six meters high and covered light lounge area designed for journalists, designers, architects and celebrities.


Rogier van der Heide / Link . Rogier van der Heide designed “Dream Cloud”, an installation consisting out of 1,500 crystals, some of them coated with transparent magenta and cyan paint, forming a surreal cloud floating above a field of genuine black tulips from The Netherlands. Bitossi does Fornasetti / Link . Saved by Droog / Link . Droog presented 5135 objects “saved” from liquidation. Lots of liquidation sale products destined for destruction were acquired and assigned to 14 designers to reuse and redesign	Luceste - What is Light ? / Link . Toshiba revealed that LED lighting is not only environmentally friendly but also offers levels of precision and expressiveness that can shape spaces and create moods.


Achille Castiglioni at Depadova / Link . The exhibition at DePadova "Effetto Castiglioni” dedicated to models from Achille Castiglioni’s studio. He inherited his approach from his father Giannino Castiglioni, a painter and sculptor: “there is a lot of model making in my work, also because I am the son of a sculptor and I always saw my father working with his hands and shaping material into the desired form”. On this occasion education (ArtEZ), local authority (City of Arnhem) and industry (Weltevree) present the creative spirit of enterprise under the title Made in Arnhem Made in Arnhem is an exploration through the ‘mind’ of a designer, but also through the execution of the idea

Amplify Chandelier for Swarovski / Link . Amplify, a chandelier concept created by Yves Behar FuseProject. Rather than creating something so expensive that no one can possibly ever buy it, they created a crystal chandelier that was both beautiful and economical.	Mini Countryman / Link . Trend review - Patchwork / Link . This autumn – winter year on the Fashion Catwalks a discernable trend emerged -‘patchwork’.	Thomas Heatherwick - Spinning . British designer Thomas Heatherwick’s Spun chair for Magis is made for good times. He successfully turns a 360 degree rotating spinning top into a fully functional chair. Suitable for internal and external use


Barber Osgerby for Sony / Link . The Barber + Osgerby exhibition is a spectacular visual insight into Sony’s creative essence and evolving approach to design. The exhibition space at Salone drives this design concept to another level; visualising the exploration of a human-centric design essence symbolised through lifestyle-focused concepts. At Nilufar Gallery, Martino Gamper stands beneath the rainbow archway of his L’Arco Della Pace bookcase – a riff on the polychrome fountain of Ercol chairs the London designer installed in the courtyard of the V&A during September’s London Design Festival.


Tokujin's Snowflakes & Invisibles / Links . 50,000 sticks of transparent plastic assembled in the shape of snowflakes that recreates the magic of a snowy landscape, portraying the notion of transparency and the domination of light that is dear to Tokujin. Fendi - Design Vertigo / Link . Four site-specific installations aim to highlight the ways in which designers are venturing outside the bounds of traditional practice and joining forces with unlikely partners.	Puma shoe boxes / Link . For the last 21 months Fuse Project have been thinking about shoeboxes: how to fold them, how to ship them and how to reduce them. In the end, they decided to get rid of them altogether.


Armani Casa / Link . Elegance and sobriety have always been Armani’s guiding aethestic in fashion, but also in home styling, the concept is once again strongly expressed.	Established & Sons / Link . The company, which formerly relied solely on British designers, introduced new furniture and lighting during Milan’s Design Week from a host of other international designers.


Depadova's sofa collections / Link . The revered Italian brand Depadova has presented two new sofa collections. Tomo by Naota Fukasawa & Chat by Carlo Colombo.	Veuve Clicquot / Link . This year Veuve Clicquot has commissioned works by the Campana Brothers and Mathieu Lehanneur to decorate the Hôtel du Marc, part of its newly renovated chateau in Reims.

Sugar Lamp / Link . This beautiful white lamp by Finnish designer Anna Palomaa was inspired by the atmospheric glow of winter snow. Her ‘Kide’ Lamp glitters when illuminated; because it’s made entirely from sugar.	Canon Neoreal / Link . Canon presented Neoreal, an installation titled “Prism Liquid,” in which numerous projectors cast moving images over a spider-like architectural structure.


Crash Chair by Konstantin Grcic / Link . “Crash” by Konstantin Grcic for Established & Sons is unlike typical upholstered furniture which is built on a wooden frame with foam padding. It consists of a tubular frame and a two-inch loose foam moulded cover to fit over the metal frame.	Diversity by Nacho Carbonell / Link . In the new “Diversity” series, Nacho Carbonell takes twenty iterations of the same form – a slender-legged chair attached to a narrow, covered desk – and creates distinct ?nishes for each with the result suggesting a demographically diverse neighborhood.


Swarovski Elements at Work / Link . Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi for Swarovski Elements at Work designed a small armchair that’s perfect for reading or relaxing, upholstered in a bespoke fabric using crystal.	B chair by Konstantin Grcic / Link . This folding chair designed by Konstatin Grcic is presented at this year`s Salone del Mobile by the Spanish manufacturer Bd Barcelona


Camparativo @ Triennale / Link . Matteo Ragni conceived the design for the new bar of Campari in the park of the Triennale. The bar is the place for socializing.	Swarovski Spark(les) / Link . The multi-part installation for Swarovski Crystal Palace, has been designed, explains Nicolas, to replicate ‘a space with no gravity’ where ‘crystal and light become life’.


Poltrona Frau / Link . CEO Poltrona Frau, Dario Rinero, at the presentation of the group’s results in view of Salone del Mobile, confirmed that the pace of activity in the first quarter of the year turned out to be perfectly in line with their forecasts.	Swarovski Designer Talk / Link . ‘Designer Conversations’ between current Crystal Palace chandelier designers Gwenael Nicolas, Yves Béhar and Roger van der Heide alongside artists Studio Job, and Nadja Swarovski. ( chaired by Future Laboratory )


Paola Lenti novelties / Link . Paola Lenti presents its new interior and exterior designs in the cloister and the garden of Palazzo delle Stelline	Recycling Cookware / Link . Most cookware made in circular punched panels of inox metal and all triangular odds become scrap. IPAC and Tomitadesign now recyle these scrap of stainless steel 18-0 into amusing multi-use objects, and now launch the Clippe series.


Adopt a Prototype / Link . Adottaunprototipo: 1) Choose a Product That You Believe In, 2) Adopt it by Participating in the making of the proyotype 3) And Then You May Bring home the first piece.	Void lamp / Link . A series of lights that reference the Olympic medals. Solid metal sheets are pressed, spun and brazed to form a double wall shade. These mysterious lighting objects are hand polished to create a mirrored surface which is then lacquered to maintain a high gloss finish.


Tom Dixon's Avatar / Link . Virtual Milan is a virtual scene that allows online viewers from anywhere in the world to experience the Tom Dixon stand. By navigating an avatar of their choice, viewers are able to explore all the elements of the stand as if they were actually at the exhibition	Tom Dixon "Flash Factory" / Link . The first in a series of self-published Tom Dixon books. The paperback outlines a critique of various design production formulas, followed by Tom’s own proposal for a Future Industry


Maruni / Link . Maruni will have a joint exhibition with SIWA and Plus Minus Zero which are both companies organized by Naoto Fukasawa. Maruni is displaying the sofa from the Traditional Series and the armchair and table from the Hiroshima series.	Swarovski's Stellar star / Link . Tokujin Yoshioka will present a new work “Stellar” for Swarovski Crystal Palace. “Stellar” is created based on a concept of “creating an artificial star” in a spherical form.


Maarten Baas' s Analog clock / Link . Baas is known for his handmade limited pieces, mostly made for museums and private collectors. This year he has developed his “Analog Digital Clock” shown in Milan 2009 into a one dollar iPhone app.	Lazerian furniture / Link . Standing at almost one metre tall, the Lazerian mascot has been transformed into a paper sculpture. The components are plotted onto paper, then hand cut and glued to form the final model


RCA Hotel - tord boontje / Link . Professor Tord Boontje, Head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art will be presenting work by 90 students and recent graduates of the MA course at this year’s Milan Salone del Mobile	Waiting in Milan / Link . “From this day forward” is curated by Italian critic Diana Marrone, and it is the first solo show outside England by London based designers JamesPlumb.


DesignersBlock Blodging Milan / Link . For its Bodging Milano project, a team of design stalwarts including Gareth Neal and Matthew Hilton spent a week in the British countryside and went back to basics to create a greenwood chair in the great outdoors.	Living Forum / Link . Who still starts a conversation nowadays in public with a stranger? In the train, we seek out a seat from which we can avoid sitting opposite a stranger. Living forum is a meeting place in which you cannot escape making contact with others.

As an extension of a project on the theme of love, Slott Gallery and Exquise Design have invited four designers to play out their fantasies, giving shape and meaning, breathing life into their conceptions of preliminaries	Aldo Bakker / Link . Thomas Eyck presents “the copper collection” by Aldo Bakker at Spazio Rosanna Orlandi. The collection consists of different objects based on the contemporary handwriting of Bakker in perfect harmony with traditional and new production techniques

Formafantasma developed further the material, the concept of the previous project “baked”, and the celebrative and folk spirit of the “cene di san giuseppe” in Sicily, “Autarky” is an installation that proposes an autonomous way of producing goods.


Get pinched / Link . Picame ( emagazine) - That we like to pinch people is clear now and none could have more doubts! With fingers or with pegs the most important thing is to drag your attention.	Power of Love / Link . Matthieu Lehanneur In collaboration with François Brument, flux designer. The Power of Love consists of two separate sets of headphones connected to a fire, thus three elements symbolizing two lovers joined by their love.


Lighthouse lamp / Link . For Lighthouse, the Bouroullecs inspiration came from the observation of the sophisticated craftsmanship of Murano’s master glass blowers.	Fresh products from Depadova / Link . The De Padova collection is enriched, this year, with new proposals that confirm, in a fresh, modern way, the brand’s inimitable image: simplicity, elegance and coherent composition, but with something more.


Toshiyuki Kita @ Triennale / Link . Timeless Future is a sole exhibition of work over the decades, which the Japanese designer Toshiyuki Kita has dedicated to finding an answer to the near future	Dezeen at Bar Basso / Link . Dezeen – the influential on-line design magazine and Wyborowa Exquisite Vodka ( the Polish premium vodka whose bottle was designed by Frank Gehry ) celebrate at the most famous Milanese cocktail bar of Milan.


Boas Ceramics /Link . Essence was born of Luca Nichetto’s desire to share the knowledge of processes of artisanal production that he inherited when he was just a young boy. This collection sets about reinterpreting some of the most representative tools employed in artisanal glass and ceramic craftsmanship	Tom Dixon Peg chair / Link . A café chair inspired by the quietly pared down character of Japanese architecture. Peg is constructed from solid birch, making it light-weight yet robust. Easy to stack, its supremely functional shape pays homage to Rietveld.


Foodmarketo / Link . The Design Marketo store will feature a unique interior designed by London based designers, Max Lamb & Lars Frideen	Andy Rementer for Skitsch / Link . Le Briccole di Venezia / Link . 22 renowned designers and artists were asked by Riva 1920 to work the ‘Briccole’, ( posts made of chestnut oak arising from the Venetian lagoon ) into objects. Paola Lenti has responded to the request of the City of Milan – Dept. of Design, Events and Fashion – to collaborate on the creation of a lounge area in one of the most elegant and trendy zones in the city, Piazzetta Croce Rossa	Smart ologic / Link . The futuristic project by Karim Rashid is made from Dupont Corian and includes other bio-sourced sustainable components and recycled materials.


Dilmos Gallery Wonderlight / Link . For this year’s Milan design week, the dutch-belgian Studio Job and the dutch designer Pieke Bergmans, in association with italian gallery Dilmos will present “Wonderlamp” , a collection of 7 light objects. Revered designer and Head of Architecture at the Royal College of Art in London, Nigel Coates, is set to make his mark in a spectacular fashion at Milan this year with two new shows.
