Knoll Studio, renowned for its collection of classic and enduring designs, unveilled new collections by Jehs+Laub, Don Chadwick, Joseph Paul D’Urso, and reintroduced classics from Jens Risom, Alexander Girard and Maya Lin at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010.
Knoll‘s, 2010 introductions feature furniture for the home and workplace that combines a Modernist aesthetic and innovative construction and materials, designed with a versatile residential appeal.
JEHS+LAUB LOUNGE COLLECTION
Inspired by traditional quilting, the Jehs+Laub Collection—which includes a Lounge Chair and accompanying Ottoman—offers a tactile dialogue between functional form and sculptural shape. Composed of block patterns that are joined and completed with a surrounding border, it weds craftsmanship with distinctive style.
The upholstery process used to create the Jehs+Laub Collection utilizes hidden seam tufting, a technique which creates a clean, tufted surface without the need for traditional welts or buttons. The Lounge chair and Ottoman are available with a distinctive polished aluminium pedestal or an architectural, dynamic wire base; an optional articulating back provides enhanced comfort. KnollTextiles fabrics or Spinneybeck leathers with a welt detail offer maximum versatility.
Marcus Jehs and Jürgen Laub
Renowned for their modern classic furniture and lighting as well as their innovative interior projects, most notably Suite 606 at the Ice Hotel in Northern Sweden and the worldwide concept for Mercedes-Benz®showrooms, Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub live and work in Stuttgart, Germany. After attending Germany’s prestigious School of Design, the FHfG Schwabisch Gmund, the team cemented their partnership during an internship in New York, later founding jehs+laub in 1994. The design team has been the recipient of numerous awards.
SPARK™ SERIES
A new series of stacking side and lounge chairs by Don Chadwick, Spark brings people together to spark conversation, ideas and imagination. The four-leg side chair and sled base lounge chair are lightweight, sturdy, easy to clean, waterproof and UV-protected — suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. An optional seat pad, ganging device, and dolly enhance Spark’s versatility for home, corporate, healthcare, education and restaurant and hospitality environments.
Don Chadwick
Don Chadwich has pioneered the use of modern materials, molding processes and mechanisms, designing cutting-edge products that have raised the standard for their markets. The Chadwick chair, designed for Knoll in 2005, further revolutionized the office seating market. Now, with the Spark series of stacking side and lounge chairs for corporate, hospitality, educational and residential spaces, Chadwick has struck the perfect balance of design and innovation.
D’URSO SWIVEL LOUNGE
The D’Urso Swivel Lounge offers modern style that is both distinctive and functional, for home, corporate, and hospitality environments. With an adjustable seat height and a generous scale, available in different upholsteries, the swivel lounge is both comfortable and versatile.
Joseph Paul D’Urso
A student of interior design and architecture at Pratt Institute in New York, the Royal College of Art in London and Manchester College of Art and Design, Joseph Paul D’Urso made his reputation in the mid-70s designing ‘minimalist style’ private residences and showrooms. In 1980, D’Urso created for Knoll an award winning collection of high rolling tables, low tables and lounge seating. His designs reflect his preference for objects that look more ‘engineered’ than styled.
JENS RISOM SIDE CHAIR AND DINING TABLE
One of the first designers to introduce traditional, Scandinavian values to the United States, Jens Risom was part of the new vanguard that helped establish post-war America’s role in modern furniture design. In 1941, Risom designed the first full line of furniture ever commissioned by Knoll. With its streamlined curves and angles, the Risom side chair exhibits the designer’s taste for well-crafted Scandinavian Modernism. The side chair, lounge chair and dining table are available today in different woods, and a range of webbing colors— ideal for dining, lounging, and collaborative spaces.
ALEXANDER GIRARD TABLE
Alexander Girard’s work defined a new kind of ‘opulent modernism’, a look synonymous with 1950’s design. His pioneering work in fabric design as well as his innovative commercial and residential interiors captivated the public with their theatricality. Designed in 1945 for Knoll, the Girard table asymmetric shape reflects the mid-century aesthetic of clean lines, organic shapes and Girard’s view that “Art is only art when it is synonymous with living.” Available in maple, walnut and ebonized veneer, the Girard table is a modern classic that will easily fit into any residential or contract application.
MAYA LIN STONES™
Maya Lin came to international prominence with her award-winning design for the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her work blurs the boundaries between architecture and art, demonstrates a passion for topography, and a fondness for elliptical shapes and subtle curves. Maya Lin’s Adult and Child Stones for Knoll are available in a range of colors and consist of 100% recycled polyethylene. Durable, easy to clean, the Stones are ideal for occasional seating at home, in corporate and hospitality spaces — indoors and out.
